How to stretch your holiday dollar

Can you believe that there are only 6 more weekends until Christmas? I always notice each year the media and stores start pushing holiday shopping down our throats sooner and sooner. Before I was even able to wash off the Halloween makeup from my daughter, I started seeing commercials for Christmas. Personally I like to wait a bit longer, at least until Thanksgiving. But this year my budget needs to stretch a bit more so I've secretly already started my shopping. Here are a list of ways (or reminders for some) you can save or stretch your money for the holidays.  Also check out the latest deals from ChromaTan.

  1. Create a holiday budget - Make a list of the people that you are buying gifts for this year. Next to their name, enter the dollar amount you will be spending on that person and then stick to it. Don't forget to add a couple secret Santa gifts for holiday parties you are attending and also last minute gifts for unexpected guests (I recommend chocolates or wine).
  2. Pay with cash - Many of us are conditioned to pay with plastic. Whether it be your bank debit card or a credit card, it's very convenient to pull out of your wallet and slide it without a second thought. Statistics have shown that if you pay with cash, you typically spend 30% less. This will also help you avoid any interest charges that rack up every month with those charge cards.
  3. Find [needed] bargains - Black Friday and Cyber Monday are both known for its deep discounts on electronics and other big ticket items. I'm sure everyone has purchased something of significant value one of these days. Don't get too caught up in the hype. Even if the price is amazing, remember to think to yourself if you really need it.
  4. Safeguard your belongings - As a follow up to Black Friday, when you are out at the stores finding those deals, be sure to protect your devices, credit cards, and identification. Identity theft is so common these days and costs more money than you even want to think. Prevent ruining your holidays and losing your hard earned bonus to a stranger - don't fall victim to identity theft!
  5. Put aside money in advance - If you don't get a Christmas bonus, it's best to put some money aside from each paycheck so you don't end up with a new year's financial mess. Try to set aside a little bit each paycheck. Tip: If your grocery store has a club card that offers extra points when you purchase gift cards, purchase a card with each shopping trip and put that card away. You can earn rewards for your gift card purchases, and as the holidays get closer, use the cards to purchase from your list - or give the cards as gifts.
ChromaTan is on board for great deals for your holiday shopping. Here is what I have going on this year:
